What is your organization’s mission and cause?
GlobalGiving's vision is to unleash the potential of people around the world to make positive change happen. Our mission is to build an efficient, open, thriving marketplace that connects people who have community and world-changing ideas with people who can support them.
What are some of the programs available through your organization?
The programs involved in the GlobalGiving platform span the globe and address a wide range of causes from health and education to climate change and the environment. Whether you're interested in providing Indian orphans with accommodation, clothing, and education or bringing clean water to children's hospitals in China, you can support program-specific efforts of your choice via our platform.
What is the history behind your organization?
In 1997, World Bank executives Mari Kuraishi and Dennis Whittle were asked to develop innovative ways to combat poverty. They created the Bank's Development Marketplace, a first-of-its-kind event where people from around the world competed for World Bank funds. The event's success unveiled the enormous potential of a global marketplace for philanthropy, and participants asked for a real marketplace that was open year round and operated virtually. Mari and Dennis saw the brilliance of this idea, left the World Bank and launched GlobalGiving.
GlobalGiving is changing the way people give, offering donors a transparent, high-impact giving experience. You choose where you want your money to go, and we get it there, quickly and efficiently. Locally-run projects with creative ideas that would never be funded through traditional structures also have access to new sources of funds. And finally, we make sure donors get feedback about how their contributions have been put to work and the results achieved - with satisfaction guaranteed through the GlobalGiving Guarantee.
The projects on GlobalGiving go through a rigorous due diligence review, satisfy IRS guidelines for international grant-making and tax deductibility, and follow national guidelines for anti-terrorism.
What motivates you to continue to work with your organization?
From a small office in Washington, DC, the GlobalGiving team is able to reach around the globe every day in our interactions and support of innovative entrepreneurs doing great work on the ground. The dedication of these individuals and organizations constantly inspires me, and I'm very proud to dedicate my days to trying to raise as much awareness and garner as much support for their work as possible.
